War Paint

The Indian 640 was the military version a 750 cc Sport Scout, it was one of several different models built by Indian for the war effort in WWII. Although not as popular with the troops as Harley-Davidson's WL, the Indian 640 did the job it was built for. Slightly under powered compared to the H-D WL, the 640 was a good machine and made up for it's lack of speed with dependability and endurance.
A rumor has persisted since WWII that a Liberty Ship full of these bikes are sitting out in the middle of that Atlantic Ocean, the victim of a nazi u-boat attack. Whether this is true or not, is a matter of speculation, most 640's were used around military bases here in the states, but some were exported to all theaters of operations including the Pacific. What is true is that Indian Motorcycle Company of Springfield, Massachusetts built over 33,000 motorcycles for use by the military in WWII.
