Description
On the Pennsylvania Railroad the K-4 Pacific was the queen of the rails. Designed and developed at the Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA, the K-4 was described as the perfect steam locomotive. The K-4 was the backbone of the Pennsy's passenger fleet hauling all the famous named trains like the Liberty Limited, the Pennsylvania Limited and the Broadway Limited. Working with industrial designer Raymond Loewy, the Pennsylvania Railroad's Engineering Department streamlined K-4 3768, coupled with the special streamline treatment was a special bronze paint job for her debut at the 1938 World's Fair. She was later repainted in the Pennsy's traditional Brunswick Green. My illustration shows this famous locomotive speeding below the High Line near Philadelphia, PA in the early 1940's.
