Description

I did this illustration for this years Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators show at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. The show is called "Every Story Tells a Picture". The assignment was to do a book cover for a novel, but the illustation had to be based on a page in the book.

I did a cover for James Carroll's "Supply of Heroes". In this historic novel "Supply of Heroes" Carroll puts you right in the middle of WWI and the Easter Uprising. From the back stage of the Abbey Theatre to the trenches of the Western Front to steps of the GPO in Dublin. James Carroll takes you deep within the ranks of the 4th Connaught Rangers fighting at the front and the IRA fighting in the streets of Dublin. We meet Irish martyrs James Connolly, Padraic Pearse, and Roger Casement as well as Lady Gregory, Maude Gonne and William Butler Yeats, luminaries and intellectuals of the the Celtic Revival, who helped to spawn revolution and nationalism in Ireland.

Being the son of and Irish Catholic mother and an Scots-Irish Presbyterian father, I've always been fascinated by the dynamic conflicts of the two cultures. This novels shows the deep divides and common ground within the two distinct Irish cultures. It also shows that in times of trouble, there is no shortage of heroes and hope among the Irish people.

This is a vector illustration done in Adobe Illustrator 8.0 on an Apple G4 Power Mac and based rough pencil sketches of photos from WWI.
