Description

During the Great Depression of the 1930's, Stinson Aircraft Corporation of Wayne Michigan, built their popular Model "A" Skyliner Tri-Motor. The Skyliner was a state of the art commercial airliner and was used by many of the fledging airlines of the day, including American, Braniff, Delta, Eastern, Pennsylvania Central, TWA and United Airlines. More economical to fly than it's competitors like the Ford Tri-Motor, the Skylines were priced at around $26,000. Unlike the Ford, the Stinson Model "A" Tri-Motor was the hottest thing going in modern air travel. Stylish and with beautiful Art Deco lines, the Skyliners came equipped with all the latest amenities including hot and cold water, toilet facilities, cabin heaters and a two-way radios! The Model "A" was a low wing monoplane with fabric covered metal construction and retractable landing gear. They were powered by three 260 h.p. Lycoming radial engines and had a cruising speed of 162 mph. The main and aft cabin could accommodate eight passengers and a stewardess. Loaded weight including passengers, luggage and mail was 9,875 lbs.

Featured in this illustration is a Pennsylvania Central Airlines Skyliner. PCA flew routes between Pittsburgh and most Northeast and Midwest cities like Cleveland, Akron, Chicago, Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, as well as Washington DC, Baltimore and Norfolk. Pennsylvania Central Airlines later became Capital Airlines.
