Pittsburgh and Lake Erie

For many people walking across the Smithfield Street Bridge in Pittsburgh, it's just an old building, but it's beauty has never escaped me and I've shot many photos of the building going back to when I was a graduate fresh out of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Back then, it was still a railroad station, but the daily trains were fast fading away and soon were just a memory. Today the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad is gone, now part of CSX. The old station is an office building and restaurant, part of the Station Square complex that includes many restaurants, Freight House Shops as well as night clubs and hotels.

This shot was taken just above track level looking up at the Smithfield Street Entrance. My great grandfather worked for the P&LE in the late 1800's after coming to Pittsburgh from his native Ireland.
