Pittsburgh and Lake Erie by yankeedog Pittsburgh and Lake Erie by yankeedog
For many people walking across the Smithfield Street Bridge in Pittsburgh, it's just an old building, but it's beauty has never escaped me and I've shot many photos of the building going back to when I was a graduate fresh out of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Back then, it was still a railroad station, but the daily trains were fast fading away and soon were just a memory. Today the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad is gone, now part of CSX. The old station is an office building and restaurant, part of the Station Square complex that includes many restaurants, Freight House Shops as well as night clubs and hotels.

This shot was taken just above track level looking up at the Smithfield Street Entrance. My great grandfather worked for the P&LE in the late 1800's after coming to Pittsburgh from his native Ireland.

Amazing shot! There's nothing like the splendor and beauty of Pittsburgh, and you do such a perfect job reminding people.

That'd be great, since my ambition turned from retiring to Maui to retiring to Pittsburgh within a year of living there. XD

That's cool! Pittsburgh would welcome you back! I have some friends who went to CMU from out of state and they never left! I would love to live in Virginia or South Carolina, but my heart will always be in the 'Burgh! :-)

you have a fabulous "eye" Don.... I've looked at this picture over and over... there is something very pleasing about it... it is "harsh" steel yet it looks soft... and the composition is wonderful.

Thanks Chris, I really appreciate that. The are so many interesting nooks and crannies on the old P&LE station. I really should try to document more of it. The interior with the Grand Concourse Restaurant is spectacular too. The entrance just below this entrance is interesting too. They have valet parking, it would be interesting to park some vintage cars there and take some shots.

This is great! It would make a nice pen and ink reference too.
