She was born Janis Lyn Joplin in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 19th 1943. By the 1960's she was the Queen of Rock N Roll. Combining Soul, Blues and Rock N Roll, she became one of the most powerful voices of her generation. Nobody cold belt out a tune like Janis. Her raspy soulful voice was unmistakable. Her rise was meteoric, her fall was catastropic. All the world would come to know this wild eyed girl from Texas. She was on the fast track, she had it all, but she lived her life on a razors edge. Sex, Drugs & Rock N Roll had taken it's hold on her. A steady string of smash hits made her a household name and then all that suddenly, she was gone. Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose on October 4, 1970, she was 27 years old.
Piece of My Heart
Hey, come on, come on, come on, come on!
Didn't I make you feel, oh honey, like you were the only man I ever wanted, that I ever needed ? Oh ho, honey, didn't I give you nearly everything that I ever had to give ? Oh, you know I did! But each time I tell myself that i, I think I've had enough, Well, I'm gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough.
I want you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it, Take another little piece of my heart now, baby! Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah, yeah, yeah. Have a, have another little piece of my heart now, daddy daddy daddy, You know you got it if it makes you feel good, Yes indeed, whoaa...
Absolutely Stunning Don.You know I am a great fan of Rock and Roll(currently listening to my home town boy Chuck Berry's Greatest Hits 2 "Maybelline why can't you be true"Please do a series of Rock and Roll Stars. How about one of Van Morrison or Chuck Berry. These people of Rock are more than just musicians they are cultural icons of the West and represent us and our culture to the world. When I think of the music that some of these musicians who died young like Janis could have made it makes me angry at the importers of the poison that killed them. This is one of the negative sides of our culture(Drugs). One of my favorute works my man!!

Thanks Jojo! The Steeler game got borring the other night, so I was watching a show on Public TV that was all about Rock N Roll back in the '60. I was so inspired by the show and the segment on Janis Joplin, that I had to do this illustration. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Dwayne Allman would be good candidates too. Rock N Roll icons and their tragic lives can get a little depressing. Check out the illustration my daughter did of another Rock N Roll icon: [link]

Awesome work. I remember seeing the image that you used as a reference along time ago and had to buy the album just because of it. You certainly added to it.

Wonderful piece Don, you've capture the whole of who she was and the spirit of those years of madness, her voice never stops to cry and she's alive in every woman's heart, she did so much in her way
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
