Description

One of the last holdouts for steam locomotives on American railroads besides the Norfolk & Western Railroad, was the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Pennsylvania began to aquire diesel locomotives as early as 1937. By 1957, diesel electric locomotives from GM, Baldwin and Alco had completly replaced the aging fleet of Altoona and Baldwin built steamers. Soon the fire breathing monsters that conquered the Allegheny Mountains were a memory. My illustration features a General Motors Electromotive Division E8A diesel electric, known affectionately as covered wagons, these sleek locomotives became synonymous with American railroading.
