Oakland is the cultural, medical, educational and at one time, the sports center of the city of Pittsburgh. Most Pittsburghers will recognize this scene or at least parts of it. The bronze statue that tops this beautiful fountain in Schenley Park is called "A Song to Nature" it was sculpted by Victor David Brenner who also designed the 1909 Lincoln head penny! [link] The fountain base, complete with spiting turtles was designed by Harold Van Buren Magonigle who also designed the tomb for President William Mckinley. The car? It's a Packard 230 Coach! In 1923, you could get this car in any color as long as it was Packard Blue. The Police bike is a City of Pittsburgh, Department of Public Safety ( DPS ), 1200 cc Indian "Big Chief". Off in the distance to the right is the back of the scoreboard at old Forbes Field ( 1909 - 1970 ) where Honus Wagner, Pie Traynor and later Roberto Clemente and the Pittsburgh Pirates used to played. This was back when Oakland was a neighborhood and fans could walk to the ball games and boxing matches held at Forbes Field. A special thanks to my friend Bruce Cridlebaugh [link] for providing a little history on the statue and fountain as well as some Pittsburgh Pirate baseball history!

Excellent pic Don, great handling of the two vehicles and the typography is just right too.

If I may suggest, I think the glance between the smiling lady in the front seat and the cop is a good focal point, but the face of the lady in the back seat detracts from this for me. I would maybe try subduing her somewhat (changing to a profile view maybe?) or even perhaps taking her out.

Incredible work. Looks very time-consuming :). Gotta love it.

Thanks! I worked on this piece over a 2 week period, doing a little bit at a time as time allowed during the work week and more time on the weekends. I worked the illustration in layers, ie: the Background, the Fountain, the Packard, the Indian, and the Cop. When you do something like this, it's not as overwhelming if you break it down into separate elements. -YD

Thanks Brian! I bought the photo years ago, because of the Indian Motorcycle, over the years I grown to appreciate all the other aspects of the photo. I'd been kicking around the idea of doing a vector illustration of it and finally got up the courage to tackle it. -YD
