Coke or Pepsi? As far as the ghost ads I've shot around here, it's 3 to zip in favor of Coca-Cola, but I did get an excellent store front a while back in Lawrenceville that had some nice vintage Pepsi graphics. I don't drink pop or soda so it doesn't much matter to me.
This ghost ad is on the side of a building in New Kensington. The owner told me the building was built around 1902, that ad should date to somewhere around there. This ad was exposed after the Liberty Theater built in 1921 was torn down in the 1980's. So I'm guessing that there was only a window of about 19 years at the most that this ad was visible till the Liberty Theater was torn down.
It was claimed that Coca-Cola cured a host of problems including morphine addiction, dyspepsia, neurasthenia, headache and even impotence! I'm guessing that the 9 milligrams of cocaine in every glass may have caused more problems than it cured, at any rate in 1903 cocaine was removed for the recipe. It's like our Ghost Ad here in New Kensington dates back to that time. Coca-Cola's first outdoor advertisement was painted in 1895, ten years after it was invented. It would be interesting to know if this is a pre-coacaine or post-cocaine advertisement.
The current owner of the building tells me he has no plans to paint over the old ad, so I guess she will just go on fading away.
