Board Tack Racing was a very popular sport in the early 1900's. Board tracks built with 2x4 planks sprang up all across the country, mostly 1/3rd of a mile, with banked turns up to 45º! High speeds and high G's were the norm. Companies like Cyclone, Excelsior, Flying Merkle, Harley-Davidson, Henderson, Indian and a host of others competed in this high stakes game of raw horsepower and raw nerves. Death was a constant companion for both riders and spectators which helped lead to the end of Board Track Racing, but for a while it was the rage.

I've read articles in what used to be Open Wheel magazine about midget races at board tracks in the early 30s, and it wasn't uncommon to go to a board race and see someone die. Horrific to think about, but that's how it was. And then people realized it wasn't worth it in the end.

There were some horrific crashes on the board tracks, Not just the riders, but the spectators were in mortal danger, it was a blood sport, there is no doubt about that. My told me about going to motorcycle hill climbs and seeing the same sort of carnage. -YD

Thanks, it's a nice technique and adds a little more impact to a design. I don't like to overdo it, but I've done it on several pieces and it's worked out well. Here's a few other examples: [link][link][link] -YD
