Description

The 457th Bomb Group (Heavy) was part of the 94th Bomb Wing of the 1st Air Division of the 8th Air Force, called "The Fireball Outfit", the Bomb Group was activated on July 1st, 1943. The group motto was "Fait Accompli" (An Accomplished Fact). The 457th Bomb Group was stationed at an air base near the town of Peterborough in Connington, County of Huntingdonshire in East Anglia. The base was named for the small hamlet of Glatton.
The 457th was the first American Bomb Group to fly a bombing mission with all metal finish B-17s. Prior to this all B-17s had been painted Olive Drab. The OD paint added to the total weight of the plane and increased the aerodynamic drag on the plane.
The Bomb group consisted of 4 Squadrons; 748th, 749th, 750th and the 751st. They flew their first mission on February 21st 1944. The Group would fly a total of 237 bombing missions. Their last mission was flown on April 20, 1945. Total bomb tonnage dropped was 16,915 tons. On June 4th, 1945, with their objective completed, aircraft of the 457th began flying back to the United States. On August 28th 1945, the 457th Bombardment Group (H) was disbanded. My uncle, Floyd N. Henderson flew on the last 21 missions of the war in Europe.

My gradfather flew many missions in the 750th squadron of the 457th group. We have his bomber jacket with "Betty X" on the back. It is in bad shape at this point. I wish I could bring that art back to life.
